The strategic planning process is a process you take as an organization in a deliberate attempt to align to your mission. You work together with your board and other stakeholders to seek answers to the following four questions:
1. Where are we now?
2. Where do we want to go?
3. What will get in our way?
4. How will we get there?
COVID-19 has taught us hard lessons about preparedness. If nonprofits are willing to act now, in a new and different manner, they can avoid repeating these hard lessons. Nonprofits must recalibrate and implement new, fresh ideas as they plan for 2022 and beyond. Answering the questions above involves a step-by-step guided holistic approach. It is a time for discovery and to develop guiding principles and values. Strategic Planning should not be done in-house because it dilutes the process. An outside facilitator provides an unbias perspective that is necessary for growth. When we are in it, we cannot see it.
A well-written strategic plan is a marketing tool to provide a story about your organization and its importance to potential donors; additionally, it helps potential donors learn how they can help and current donors increase their donations.
